What Are Color Lab Colors?

COLOR LAB™: Mad Micas colorists create hundreds of colors that don't go into regular production; here's your chance to take a peek into the lab.

Each month we'll be rolling out a new color complete with notes from that colorist's lab book and making it available for one month only.

Note: Some Color Lab colors may eventually be made part of our permanent collection.

The Color Lab selection for September, 2024 is:
Book N11, Entry 13.

Limited Edition, available through September 30, 2024.

THIS COLOR DOES NOT EXIST! (digitally)

“In spiritualism, ectoplasm is a substance or spiritual energy "exteriorized" by physical mediums.” – Wikipedia (Ectoplasm (paranormal)).

There is no physical evidence that ectoplasm exists. Likewise, we can present no digital evidence that this color actually exists, because it can’t be photographed. Really.

Our Ectoplasm pigment blend exists beyond the physical world reproduceable on computer monitors and phones screens – we were absolutely unable to photograph it. The photo we've put on this page is close, but it misses the real magic.

So even though this is one of our favorite colors of all-time, we can’t show you why. We can’t show you the ethereal glow of Ectoplasm in epoxy, or the deep, saturated blue/green/I’ve-never-seen-this in CP soap.

We can’t show you how it’s so saturated you can get away with using half the usual amount in soap and still end up with something like a magical jelly-jewel. And we definitely can’t show you the crazy glow that appears when it’s hit with a blacklight (yes, it’s blacklight reactive to boot).

You just have to see it in person to believe it.

LAB NOTES
BN11-E13
(Ectoplasm™)

I can’t quite put my finger on what color this pigment blend is. Is it a blue-green? A green-blue? Aquamarine or turquoise? I can’t find what color to categorize this in, but it is absolutely stunning and unlike anything I’ve seen before outside of hydrated chromium green - and this is better.

It is incredibly saturated, and I needed very little to get the color to pop.

CP Soap: Tested using both 1½ and 3 grams/pound of cold process soap batter. The 3 gram batch is incredibly rich and jewel-like - this prompted the 1½ gram test which still gave me a very bright color only slightly less saturated. Amazing.

Consistent in both epoxy resin and clear MP soap (usage in MP was ½ teaspoon per lb. of clear base). Highly predictable.

Beautiful Jewel Tone

Beautiful jewel tone, teal-like but better. Pictures in gelled cold process with bubble gum pink. The Pictures don't do it justice and I would absolutely buy this color again.
